Photo exhibition on the Friedensplatz in Darmstadt

Queen Victoria

The Grandmother of Europe

11 July to 13 August 2023

Born in 1819, Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1901. An entire period of history, the Victorian era, bears her name. The British Empire prospered politically, economically and culturally during her 63-year reign. Guided by her skilful policy of marital alliances to expand Britain’s influence on Europe, many of Victoria’s descendants – nine children and 42 grandchildren – married into royal and noble families across the Continent.

The photo exhibition on the Friedensplatz portrays the network of intertwining family ties between the House of Hesse-Darmstadt and the British royal house.
